Topics in Physics, Day 2

Today we worked on our marble run and learned about two-dimensional motion. We started the day by working on the marble run we started working on yesterday. We worked on assembling and testing as well as doing some more designing as we went. On our marble run, we have a half-pipe, straight track, a funnel, and more. Building the marble run was really fun, but it was quite hard because we were using paper to build the actual track. We, unfortunately, did not get to finish the whole marble run, because we did run into a few difficulties with part of it. It was a little frustrating that we were not able to work out some of the difficulties, but I did have a lot of fun building the marble run and doing the test runs.

In the afternoon we jumped right into two-dimensional motion. We first learned how to graph position-time, velocity-time, and acceleration-time graphs. After that, we did a small experiment with a motion detector. What we did was place the motion detector on a table and we each took turns either standing still, walking away or towards the motion detector, and walking at different speeds. It was really cool to see what different graphs we would get depending on how fast we were moving and whether we accelerated or not. Afterward, we learned a little bit more about velocity, speed, acceleration, and displacement. Then we did another experiment with the motion detector but this time we had used a cart on a ramp. We would push the cart towards the motion detector and see what graph we would get. The graphs we got were pretty interesting because there were a few bumps in the graphs which meant that there was something on the track that caused friction and changed the cart's movement. We ended the day by putting together some hot wheels tracks and cars in preparation for our activity tomorrow. I can't wait to see what we do with the hot wheels tomorrow!

 Topics in Physics, Day 7 By: Kilali and Sara Sara Working on a Pivot  Today was an interesting day. We spent the morning doing Pivots. The three pivots that we completed were about Freefall, Collisions, and Forces of Objects on a Ramp. It was very interesting to see how the topics we have been learning about all come together and how they can be used in the real world.   All of our BrushBots  After lunch, we got to make brush bots! we built these robots made of toothbrush heads, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, a battery, and little motors. The motors allowed the robots to vibrate which caused them to move. All of our brush bots ended up spinning in circles instead of going in a straight line. It was very difficult to get it to go in a straight line because you had to get the legs to be the perfect length and angled the right way.  Topics in Physics, Day 5 By Alex and Kilali Sara working on the Hotwheels activity Today we did a lot of fun lessons and activities. We started off doing some practice force equations since we started learning about forces yesterday. These were pretty difficult, but it made me very happy when we got the correct answers in the end. Afterward, we did an activity with the Hotwheels. In this activity, we set up a pully system with the Hotwheels and where we had washers hanging off the table which was connected to our Hotwheels car. We would attach a different amount of washers each time we ran the experiment. We did this activity to see the change in acceleration of the Hotwheels car for each amount of washers we used. This activity was very fun and exciting. Topics in Physics, Day 6 Photos By: Sara - Blog By: Alex Kilali Connecting the Spiral Track Segments The Building Blocks of our Coaster We started off the second week of our A-Term by doing some practice and review into the concepts of energy and momentum, and doing a few fun projects that applied these concepts. We built roller coasters! Using some of our advanced lab tools and our new skills of interpreting data from a graph, we were able to see the acceleration and velocity of the car that we shot down the rollercoaster. The first rollercoaster we made in the first half of the day went well and was able to launch the card using a chain and a motor. The second one didn't really go as planned. We had to use improvisational engineering skills to change most the design of the rollercoaster, and it ended up being twice as large as it was supposed to be according to the instruction book.
